About Our Lineage

The Portland School of Tai Chi Chuan (PTSCC) is an Oregon non-profit that was founded in 1988 by Patrik Donahue and A.J. Allen.  We teach Tai Chi Chuan, as brought from China by Master of Five Excellences Professor Cheng Man-Ching.  The Professor passed student instruction and teacher training to senior student Patrick Watson, founder of the international Tai Chi Foundation (TCF), which offers instruction in the Tai Chi form, Sword, Push Hands, Roots and Branches Qi Gong, and Meditation.  TCF trains Tai Chi teachers.  PSTCC also offers the “Walking” Stick Staff Form.

The Benefits of
Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese exercise that promotes health and well-being.  As you move through a series of postures at a slow and even pace, your body relaxes and your mind and emotions become calm. Tai Chi is gentle enough for anyone to enjoy, no matter the age. Practicing Tai Chi increases circulation, improves balance and posture, reduces stress, and increases vitality.  It combines meditation, movement and breath awareness.   Tai Chi is both a cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise.

Testimonial

"I got back into Tai Chi during the pandemic after some years away and not being able to find a school that taught the form as I’d learned it originally.  I found the Portland School of Tai Chi offering an online class for the beginning of the form. I took that class and continued through all three levels of the form, repeating several to ensure I’d really learned that portion.  I am so very grateful to the Portland School and to A.J. and Maureen for their excellent instruction which allowed me to return again to Tai Chi and incorporate it into my daily practice."
